It was a pleasure to be a part of Silvia & Peter's wedding last weekend. It was a lovely coming together of two families. Silvia read her vows in Spanish and Peter in English to incorporate both families in their wedding (Silvia's family is from Peru).

I'm often surprised just how many beautiful wedding locations there are in Vermont. The Three Stallion Inn in Randolph, VT was another one of these surprises. Especially since the staff were as wonderful to work with as Silvia and Peter...

What are "Intentional" Weddings?

What is an "intentional" wedding? To me, it is a couple's thoughtfully planned wedding. Maybe small, fun and informal or a grand gathering of friends and family or something in between... Whatever the plans, they are especially chosen to reflect the couple as individuals and as part of your friends and families' lives.

My job as a documentary photographer is to make pictures that reflect my client's wedding. These pictures reflect the emotions of the people gathered to celebrate. As well as the details, customs and traditions that the couple chooses to reflect themselves and their friends and family.

Let me show you some examples...

Nora and Chris wanted their wedding to be a true reflection of who they were. The ceremony was in two parts. The first part was a Quaker style sharing by friends and family and the second a more traditional ceremony with nontraditional reading by his sister.

The wedding was held at a beautifully restored barn. Just the right touch rustic elegance for Nora and Chris.

The Quaker ceremony included Nora's father sharing that ever since she was little she could find four leaf clovers with amazing ease... which she proved by doing so during the ceremony.

Then Nora's dad passing the clover on to Chris

The sharing of themselves didn't end at the ceremony. In lieu of gifts they asked their guests to bring likenesses of the bride and groom, made by hand or fashioned from other items.

This is just a small sample of what made Nora and Chris's wedding, their own wedding.

Before I move on to examples from other weddings, notice anything different about Nora's wedding dress? It was her Great Aunt's dress from the 1950's. And a better dress couldn't have been bought to reflect Nora's charming personality

Kelly and Jesse's wedding is very different in many way but very much an intentional wedding as well. They were married at a beautiful stone church right on the ocean in Kennebunkport, ME.

In fact, this spot is where Jesse proposed to Kelly while on vacation the previous summer. Much to their luck they were able to reserve the church for their wedding (this church is a very popular wedding location with a waiting list for most summer dates... not surprising considering how beautiful it is). Since they live in the midwest they would invite close family (about ten all together) to travel with them and share in their marriage at this idyllic location.

Family played a big role in the whole day but especially the getting ready...

After toasts and well wishes were shared during an intimate gathering.

Sara & Chris are no exception. From the very beginning Sara has checked into my blog to see how my weddings were going and sent little emails to tell me how much see loves the pictures there. She was conscientious about providing weddings details whenever there was been an update. And she encouraged me to enjoy her wedding as much as she and her guest did... So needless to say I have been looking forward to Chris and Sara's wedding for a while. And I was not disappointed to discover that they are both as sweet and thoughtful in person as they are by email and phone.

They also lucked into a beautiful fall day and location at The Lodges at Cresthaven, in Lake George, NY. Sunny and not too hot... a lovely day for a truly lovely couple....

St Ann's Episcopal Church was was beautiful and dare I say the perfect location for the ceremony. The old stone chapel sitting right on the rocky beach... Lovely! Everything from Kelly and Jesse wedding could easily be described as lovely... including the delicious dinner at Pier 77 following the ceremony.

Inspiration

This week's inspiraton comes from a recent sad event in the photography world. On March 29, 2009 Helen Levitt passed away. Although not well known to the general public she has a strong following within the photography world. She was one of the first photographers I studied before ever thinking that I would be one also. Her work speaks to me in some of the same ways that Robert Frank's work does. It is interesting for both the content and the form (the way the picture is made). A Way of Seeing is an excellent introduction to her work unfortunately it looks like it is currently out of print.

Having picked The Beatles in my last post has me feeling like I might disappoint with any subsequent musical inspiration... You know hard to start with one of the best and work from there isn't?

With that said this week I'm inspired by an older performance by Adam Lambert (yes, from American Idol). When I first heard this performance I had goose bumps it was so good...

Inspiration - An Introduction

I've been thinking for a while now about doing weekly posts (or semi-weekly knowing me) about what's inspiring me. Just a quick way to get to know a little bit more about me...

So this week I'm inspired by Robert Frank. This year is the 50th anniversary of the US release of "The Americans". I've included a few of my favorites below but the right way to see his work is to find a good copy of his monograph.

One of the reasons I'm always inspired by Robert Frank's is that he goes beyond content (what is in the picture). His pictures are well made from one edge to of the frame to the other. I think this is one of the reasons his work is still important for people (especially photographers and artists) to look at today.

I'm also inspired by The Beatles white album. I've just recently discovered much of the music on this album and I'm amazed at the risks they were taking at the time. It seems so common place now to hear so many influences in the music heard everyday to forget that it comes from somewhere. Personal favorites (right now)... Blackbird; Cry, Baby, Cry; and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. This is one to find on CD or vinyl; unfortunately it's not available on iTunes.

I wonder what will be inspiring me next week...

Heather & MarK - South Hadley/Northampton, MA

I had the pleasure of photographing Heather and Mark's wedding at the beautiful Mount Holyoke Abby Chapel and Hotel Northampton. We also happened to have the most amazing March weather as well. Sunshine, warm temps and two very happy and in love people... What could be better?

The Quiet Months

The 2008 season is officially over and I'm just finishing up the processing of one last wedding. December through April tend to quiet months here at Reid Photography. Although this year my 2009 season starts in January. So look for new wedding pictures mid January. I also add some personal work this time of year as well. Which reminds me you can see more personal work and keep up with the (relatively) quiet goings on at Reid Photography on Facebook. Become a fan of my page or send a friend request to me. Which also reminds me... this year I'm adding Facebook galleries to my packages. I've always added some sneak peek pictures to my blog for couples to share with friends and family. Now I'm adding the sneak peek to Facebook as well to make it easier to share. Send links of either to friends and family or tag them right in Facebook.

A couple times a year I have the pleasure of helping my husband photograph weddings. And what a wedding to photograph this was! Sarah and Coley made a stunning couple. And the location, The Mountain Top Inn and Resort, was amazing. Sarah had put a lot of thought into the theme which was "better together"... right down to the unique salt and pepper shakers on every table.

In reflecting on my own wedding thirty years ago, I clearly remember the dominant presence of our photographer. We had constant requests to pose for photos and as someone who is camera shy, I found that pretty stressful. It was so nice that you were unobtrusive and not at all demanding.

Sara and Kirk told me that you were great to work with -- very professional and always prompt with replies to their questions. What a way to end the season! Beautiful weather, sweet couple, gorgeous location... lucky me!

Megan and Mike's ceremony and reception were held at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center which couldn't have had better light to work with. I love day time ceremonies because there is no shortage of beautiful light to work with (usually). The Riverview Cafe catered a delicious and varied dinner as well.

Friday was the start of my whirlwind weekend. First, I had the pleasure of photographing Sara and Kirk's wedding at St. Ann Church in Lenox, MA. According to Father CJ the parish priest at St Ann Church, the church is one of most popular locations in the Berkshires to get married. I can certainly see why... beautiful stonework outside and intricate carved angels and stencil work inside... it certainly makes a stunning setting. And Sara was equally stunning...

The reception was held at the Sunset Farm Inn. The converted barn was a beautifully rustic setting to an emotional and fun party to celebrate the coming together of two very special families.

Sometime I just know when a couple is going to be great to work with... When Boston based Jessica and Neal drove over 2 hours from Boston during the remnants of hurricane last fall I had a pretty good guess. It turns out I was right...

Words can't describe how much fun I had at Jessica & Neal's wedding this past Saturday! I'm not sure I've ever laughed so much during the wedding day before...

Jessica and Neal chose the Old Tavern in Grafton, VT for there ceremony and reception. What a great choice too! It seemed like the whole town was decked out in quintessential Vermont splendor including the weather which couldn't have been more beautiful after a rough start in the morning.

Every once in a while I get an email that really lifts my spirits. This happened again this weekend when Abby (Nora's mom - see below to meet Nora and Chris) sent me this wonderful email.

When Nora told us she wanted a wedding photographer, we were skeptical. We got married in 1976 at my parents house in South Royalton , in a decidedly casual home wedding. I think one of our friends took photos and we have maybe 10 remaining that we can put our hands on. So, in typical “1970’s fashion”, we told Nora that we didn’t think it was that important to have professional photographs of one’s wedding. Well, she is of this generation, where weddings are bigger productions and she insisted that she would have and hire a photographer.

Somehow she found you. I think she lucked out. You were wonderful, completely non-intrusive and hard working. Then, to see the photos on your blog, was a confirmation of her choice and your work. I’ve looked at them multiple times and am so appreciative of your photographs and Nora’s decision to have her wedding professionally documented.

Sometimes you just know that a wedding is going to be special... Fate seemed to be at work with Chicago based Nora and Chris's wedding from the very first few emails I received from them. First the wedding was to take place at a barn I have been admiring for at least five or six years. The West Monitor Barn is special landmark off of route 89 between exit 10 and 11. (Be sure to read about the barn's history...) Second Nora took some time to look around at all of her photography options and came back to me because she really liked my work. Third, our first phone call to talk about her plans sealed it for me... She and Chris were planning their wedding in way that I would do it if I were to do it all over again. Lots of friends and family getting to together to share in love, friendship and celebration. And much of the day pulled together (beautifully if I might add) with lots of help from their friends and family...

I really feel blessed to have shared in Nora and Chris's wedding day...

Before I leave the subject of Nora and Chris's wedding I should take a moment to mention Nancy and Ian of Elder Hill Catering (802-453-3124). Nancy and her wait staff kept everything running smoothly and looking beautiful. Ian prepared the best salmon I have ever eaten at a wedding... among so many other really delicious dishes. They were a real pleasure to work with and I highly recommend them.

Birth Photography

This is subject very near and dear to my me. I am the mother of two beautiful children and the very lucky wife of a talented photographer... When my youngest daughter was born my husband brought his camera and made (tasteful) pictures of the time during labor when our families came to share the anticipation, during the emotional time when we first met her and after when our family had the joy of meeting her too... One of our biggest joys now is sharing those pictures with our now 5 year old daughter who will forever have beautiful, tasteful pictures of her arrival into this world. Since then I have wanted to give this gift to other families... Right now I'm looking for one or two families expecting a new baby in the fall or winter of 2008-2009 to share this with. The first two sessions will be at no cost if the births are at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital or the Cheshire Medical Center / Dartmouth Medical Keene. I'm back after a much needed Holiday break... Hope everyone had a great a New Years!

I wanted to share a little bit more about myself... I've written a little before ( you can read it here) but I thought I could share some more about me.

Some personal stuff first... I am a wife and a mother of two beautiful and completely different daughters. (They are one of the reasons I only take a limited number of assignments in a year... I hate to miss too much!). My husband is my mentor, my biggest supporter and my best friend. (Wow... how many people can say that!) It was my husband who first introduced me to photography as art. On our first dates I can remember looking through monographs by Walker Evans, Eugene Atget, and Gary Winogrand and being moved by the pictures in a way that I never had been before. My husband is also the one who introduced me to wedding photography. I have learned pretty much everything I know from him... He has been a photographer for at least twenty years and he recently created ReidReviews where he writes about photography, cameras, and lens from the perspective of a working photographer/artist. Well needless to say that I am very lucky. As I mentioned my husband is the one who introduced me to wedding photography. We had talked about photography becoming my creative outlet for about year when he had an opportunity to photograph a wedding for an inn (the couple had a small budget and didn't have a photographer of their own so they happily agreed.) My husband suggested I come along and photograph the wedding with him. What an opportunity that was! I loved it from the start!

And now... starting my fourth wedding season... I'm so glad I had that chance! I was very lucky to study and work with my husband (and I still do so when we can)!

So that's me... more or less from a personal (turned professional) perspective. Now the professional... I have enjoyed meeting and working with my clients over the last three years. I have to really come to appreciate and the enjoy the different personalities and perspective that my clients have about their weddings and about life. As I mentioned this is the start of my fourth wedding season and I'm excited to work with another group of wonderful people this year. (I have a few dates available still so if you are interested in meeting to discuss your wedding please let me know. I'd like to get to know you and your plans for your wedding.) This coming year I would like to expand on the wedding photography I already enjoy doing to birth photography as well. I've found that I am moved to make pictures of very wonderful often emotional times in peoples lives. This is how I would like to use my creative energy...

What does hiring a documentary wedding photographer mean? If you've spent any time looking for a wedding photographer you've seen a lot of words used to describe them.... traditional, photojournalistic, editorial, documentary... It can get confusing. I use the term documentary to describe how I photograph your day because my approach is really to document your day. I won't direct you, move you, tell you how to look at each other (except for the formal groupings). I try my best to stay out of the way. You don't need to smile at the camera if you happen to notice me making a picture of you - just go back to what you were doing. After awhile you'll tend to forget I'm there. You and your guests won't spend all day doing what I tell you; you'll enjoy the day as it happens. Your pictures (and this is the most important part for me) will look like your wedding pictures and no one else's.

Will you direct us during the day? My approach is to observe what is happening and make pictures of what I see. In general the only time of the day I will give direction is during any posed formal pictures you require. Otherwise I stay to the sidelines and watch what is happening around me for the right moment to make the picture.

How will we know you are a good fit for our wedding? If you've read through the first Q & A and found yourself nodding in agreement then that is a good start. Send me an email (melissareidphotography@yahoo.com) with the details of your wedding and I will check my availability. If I'm available for your wedding let's meet! If we're too far away to meet before the wedding not to worry I work with many couples by email and/or phone.

What can I do to prepare my guests for the documentary approach to the wedding photography? The rehearsal dinner is a great opportunity to mention to your friends and family that your photographer has a documentary approach to photographing weddings. Let them know that you're very interested in pictures that reflect how your wedding day flows rather than the staged and posed pictures. Let them know that they do not need to stop talking, dancing or otherwise interacting and pose at any point during the day. If they notice me making pictures ask them to just continue on with what they are doing. Assure them that after awhile they'll barely notice I'm there at all.

What is included in your packages? My packages are largely based on the amount of time you need my services. Included in each package are the high resolution files in both color and black & white and the print rights. Also included is a "sneak peek" of the photographer's favorite pictures on my blog and as a Facebook gallery.

How long should we hire you for if we would like to have pictures of the getting ready, ceremony, formals and reception? Everyone's schedule and timing will be so the time one means will vary. I'm always happy to advise and offer suggestions based on each client's specific needs.

What if it is time for you leave and we haven't cut the cake, had our first dance, or (fill in the blank) yet? I check in with the bride and groom about 15 minutes before I'm scheduled to leave. I do this in case there is anything else you would like coverage of before I leave. If you decide that you require my services longer my rate is $250.00 per hour payable at that time.

Should we see each other before the ceremony? There is a trend to encourage couples to see each other before the ceremony. My preference is to follow your wishes on this. Although a private meeting before the ceremony can be a beautiful moment to photograph in the end this is your day and you should decide when you want to see each other.

Since we are very interested in the documentary approach, what can we do to speed up the formal posed pictures so we can get back to our guests? Before the wedding make a list of the important group pictures and who will be in them. Limit the list to six to eight groupings.

Plan about 30 minutes of my coverage time for about six to eight posed pictures. Provide the list to me at least two weeks prior to the wedding. Ask a friend or family member who know the people on the list and who will not be in the pictures to assist with rounding up the people needed the day of the wedding.

How many weddings do you take in a year? I generally book about 12 -15 weddings in a year. This allows me to stay at top form for each of the weddings I do book. But because of this policy it's best to check my availability as early as possible.

This Jewish proverb reminds me of so many situations in life but especially weddings. With wedding planning beginning months to years before the actual event, with all of the things to coordinate and remember it's not hard to image that things don't always go as planned. I recently heard a story from another photographer about how the best man accidentally dropped the bride's ring under a deck just before the ceremony. It ended well with the best man stripping off this tux and climbing through a 12" hole to retrieve the ring just in time to start the ceremony as if nothing happened... except the photographer was near by the whole time recording this mini event. Years later these pictures will bring back the memory of this not-so-usual moment of this couple's wedding day. Which brings me to my point... anything can happen on a big day like a wedding day and some of the most memorable pictures happen when the unexpected happens. When something unplanned happens try to take a breath and remember that it is moments like these that will be memorable and possibly meaningful later on... And don't forget to have your photographer near by so you can look back at the pictures and laugh too.

I've had a creative spirit since I can remember... for years I searched for an outlet for that creativity. I come from a family of crafts people and artisans so I had plenty of opportunities to try many things including photography. My interest in photography blossomed when I met my husband. For the first time I saw photography as more than a way to remember events or what people looked like. Instead I started thinking of photography as art... In my journey I read books about art and photography. I study master painters and highly regarded photographers. I found my creative outlet.

I'm using this creative outlet now to create beautiful documentary wedding work. When I photograph weddings my favorite compliment is "I forgot you were here". I try hard to stay out of the way and not influence what I'm seeing. I don't want to direct the activity but rather record the emotions and interactions without my interference in them.
